Imagining the Future
The Third African Conference for Linear Infrastructure and Ecology (ACLIE), co-hosted by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), Grevy’s Zebra Trust (GZT) and Ewaso Lions (EL) will be taking place on the 18 September 2023 – 22 September 2023.
Africa is currently seeing exponential expansion of linear infrastructure (which includes roads, rail, power lines, pipelines, water ways, and fencing), as a result of continental, regional and national economic development targets. In its current form, much of this infrastructure has largely negative consequences for the ecosystems it transects, eroding landscape connectivity, accelerating biodiversity loss and undermining the ecosystem services on which long-term sustainable development relies.
The environmental and infrastructure sectors in Africa are at the early stages of adopting a meaningful collaborative agenda for developing ecologically sustainable linear infrastructure. There are efforts, lessons and knowledge emerging from various parts of the continent which highlight a pressing need to move this agenda forward.

ACLIE AIMS
-
To promote a safe and ecologically sustainable pan-African linear infrastructure
-
To promote networking opportunities and effective partnerships that facilitate communication and exchange of knowledge, ideas and news.
ACLIE 2023 aims to provide a space for leaders from across Africa and the world, and across disciplines and sectors to discuss these questions, adopt new ones, and set the foundations for answering them. It is through this process that we can imaginatively contribute towards shaping a future for the continent which is truly inclusive and green.

Virtual Conference (links to be provided)
Thursday 14 September to Friday 15 September - Online Global Congress for Linear Infrastructure and Environment hosted by ACLIE
The 2nd Global Congress for Linear Infrastructure and the Environment (GCLIE) will take place online over two days between 14 – 15 September 2023. Under the main theme of PAVING A PATH FOR THE FUTURE, GCLIE is intended to compliment the current continental linear infrastructure conferences, through providing a platform that allows focus on broader, higher-level, global issues and policies that can influence national and international knowledge sharing and bring about positive change at the intersection between linear infrastructure and the environment. The inaugural Global Congress for Linear Infrastructure and the Environment (GCLIE) took place virtually on 20-21 September, 2021, and was hosted by the International Conference on Ecology and Transportation in 2021. With over 100 delegates from 24 different countries, the Congress aimed to provide a new opportunity for a global gathering that includes both the intellectual content of a scientific conference and the international reach of the United Nations and Sustainable Development Goals.
