Travel Information

For participants arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, please book your airport transfer to Brackenhurst Conference Centre by emailing aclie@africamassive.co.za AND WhatsApping John Njuguna (who is providing taxi services to ACLIE) on +254 722 260591. Please provide your full name, airline name, and arrival time. Note that this service will cost 3500 Kenyan Shillings, however, should other participants be arriving at the same time and you share a taxi with them, this cost can be split. Included in the cost is the use of the newly built and tolled Nairobi Expressway which will allow you to bypass the Central Business District on your way to the conference centre.

For payment, we recommend two options:

  1. That you exchange your home currency into dollars (including small notes) before you depart so that you can pay your driver in cash. 3500 KSh is currently equivalent to 25 USD, however, this rate may change given currency fluctuations and will be updated prior to the conference.
  2. You will find three mobile service provider kiosks (Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom) after exiting at arrivals. If you arrive before 9 pm, go to the Safaricom kiosk (it closes after 9 pm). If you arrive after 9 pm, go to the Airtel kiosk. Purchase a local sim card and ask the agent to set up mobile money for you on your phone (also known as MPESA) and to show you how to use it. (MPESA is widely used in Kenya and is very useful to have while in country as cards are often not accepted if you wish to purchase anything in the informal market.) To add money to your MPESA account, you can use the Sendwave app (www.sendwave.com) to send money from your bank account to your mobile money account. It is worth setting up the Sendwave app before your departure. You can then MPESA your driver the amount in shillings by selecting the “send money” option, entering his phone number, the amount owed and entering your password. Your driver can guide you through this if required.

Testimonials

“I am very impressed by the large South African and African representation. You have attracted a very impressive, very comprehensive range of wildlife protection-related people from the African Continent.”

Leonard Sielecki, Wildlife Program Manager – British Columbia Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure

“The ACLIE conference is an exceptional event, that coordinates industry, civil society, government, and specialists to come together to discuss theory and feasibility surrounding linear infrastructure and its practice through Africa. The conference is a founding pillar towards responsible development in Africa.”

Kishaylin Chetty, Senior Environmental Advisor – Eskom

“ACLIE has been an extremely important convergence of knowledge, expertise, and practice from the linear infrastructure and ecology and conservation worlds. We have seen everything from demonstrations of laying overpasses to the importance of road verges and powerline diverters. Critically, we have also received commitments from major financiers of how they intend, and are, streamlining their policies to ensure that, as Africa builds new infrastructure, our landscapes will remain connected, and we will remain the drivers of the process. There are few things more hopeful.”

Resson Kantai Duff, Deputy Director – Ewaso Lions

“Despite the challenges of holding a conference remotely, ACLIE 2020 was superbly organised and moderated. Participants were lively and active, and I got to meet and learn from a lot of globally experienced ecologists and industry professionals. I especially enjoyed listening to cutting edge innovations in modelling and data collection as well as successful Private-Public Partnerships that have informed infrastructure development. Can’t wait for the next conference!”

David Kimiti, Deputy Director Research & Impact – Grevy’s Zebra Trust
