Landscape visits

Mt Kenya/Samburu

Join this landscape visit to learn about the northern Kenya ecosystem, featuring the iconic Mt Kenya, the second-highest peak in Africa, and the semi-arid rangelands which are home to endangered and endemic species such as the Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe.

This trip will include one night in the Mt Kenya area, and two nights in Samburu. Participants will see and experience the old-growth tropical rainforests around Mt Kenya, including the azure pools below the mountain, as well as the exceptional diversity of wildlife in Samburu National Reserve. They will also see the Mt Kenya elephant underpass as well as learn about efforts to mitigate the impacts of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor which transects the ecosystem.

This trip will cost 472 USD.

Notes: There may be marginal additional costs due to unforeseen changes and participants are advised to be flexible and carry cards and cash in case.
Tips are not included in the trip cost. Kenya has a tipping culture. Participants may give tips per their own discretion.

Landscape visits

Diani/Tsavo

Join this landscape visit to learn about the Tsavo ecosystem, featuring the 22,000 square kilometre Tsavo East and West National Parks (the biggest in Kenya) and the southern Kenyan coast, which is host to exceptional marine biodiversity as well as the vulnerable Angolan Colobus monkey and its coastal forest habitat.

This trip will include two nights in Diani, the southern coastal town, and one night in the Tsavo area. Participants will take the Madaraka Express (Standard Gauge Railway) to the coast and back, stopping in Tsavo on the way back. They will see and experience Kenya’s coastal environment, and see a diversity of wildlife in Tsavo. They will also learn about efforts by Colobus Conservation to mitigate the impacts of roads on the Angolan Colobus monkey through aerial ladders (colobridges), and about the impacts of the Standard Gauge Railway on the Tsavo ecosystem.

This trip will cost 400 USD.

Day Trips

Kijabe Forest

Kijabe Forest is situated on the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley. It is considered a dry upland forest and is part of the Kikuyu Escarpment Forest Important Bird Area and the Eastern Afromontane biodiversity hotspot. The diversity of flora in the forest reflects its altitudinal variance (roughly 1000 m). Key species include East African sandalwood, African olive, and African pencil cedar. Mammals recorded include leopard, spotted hyena, Maasai bushbuck, suni, eland, honey badger, aardvark, and black and white colobus. The forest provides significant ecosystem services to surrounding communities.

Once connected to the Kikuyu Escarpment Forest Reserve, Kijabe Forest has become isolated due to linear infrastructure development (a highway), encroachment, resource pressures, and land use change.

Join the Kijabe Forest Trust on this day trip to learn about the forest, its significance, and the efforts of the trust to restore and conserve it, together with its connectivity to the broader ecosystem. The day trip will start at a local coffee shop, followed by a short (3 km) walk in the forest, a briefing at the railway that bisects the forest, learning about a community forest enterprise for gin production, a briefing at the highway bordering the forest, and a stop at the Rift Valley lookout point. Participants will also have an opportunity to purchase local, handmade goods.

Day Trips

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park (NNP) is a globally iconic protected area. This 117-square-kilometer park was the first established in Kenya and is the only national park globally to fall within the boundaries of a city. It hosts a diversity of habitats including forest and grassland, together with over 400 bird species and a wide variety of mammals including the endangered eastern black rhino, lion, leopard, hyena, buffalo, and the Masai giraffe.

In recent years, NNP has been affected by linear infrastructure development, namely a new highway and the standard gauge railway. The railway bisects the park.

Join this trip to learn about NNP, its significance, efforts to conserve it, and to mitigate the impacts of linear infrastructure on it.

Delegates attending this day trip are required to pay their own individual park entry fee.

In order to do so, please visit the following URL: https://kws.ecitizen.go.ke/

Once the page has loaded, go to the ‘National Park Entry’ section, and follow the process to pay for your entrance on the 20 September 2023 (credit and debit cards are accepted).
